Volunteer "Internships"
In addition to formal internships with students enrolled in a physical or occupational therapy program, the physical and occupational therapy section of the medical center has a very active volunteer program for students interested in the field of physical and occupational therapy. Volunteers observe physical and occupational therapy treatments and assist physical and occupational therapists and physical and occupational therapist assistants working in the outpatient or the acute rehabilitation settings. This may include setting up equipment, assisting patients in exercises, observing manual therapy or rehabilitation techniques, assisting in computerized exercise programs, filing, photocopying and cleaning. Volunteers typically work four hours a week up to 40 hours. This placement is an opportunity for the volunteer to observe and learn rather than to participate in a structured and formal classroom experience.
