The UC Davis - Sacramento Experiential Program, established in 1985, is based in the greater Sacramento area. The program accepts 16-18 4th-year pharmacy students from the UC San Francisco (UCSF) School of Pharmacy. The program director is located at the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento where most of the acute care Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs) are taken. As with the other off-campus programs at UCSF, students complete all requirements for graduation locally. Over 100 practitioner-faculty located throughout the Sacramento metropolitan area serve as preceptors, role models, and mentors for students assigned to the program. Faculty are employed in both teaching and community sites, providing students with an opportunity to evaluate career opportunities in a variety of traditional and non-traditional practice settings. Students also participate in various research projects and have received several research awards for their efforts.
The Sacramento site also allows UCSF Health Policy Pathway students to take rotations and perform their year-long capstone project in the program. The proximity of the program to state government, Medi-Cal headquarters and the variety of policy-specific rotations make it an appealing program to these students.
The primary sites for required and many elective APPEs are UC Davis Medical Center (both inpatient and ambulatory care practice), Mercy Medical Group, Kaiser Permanente (Roseville, Sacramento, and South Sacramento), California Poison Control System - Sacramento and Veterans Affairs (Mather Field). Other elective APPEs are available at the UC Davis Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital, Health Net of California and the Department of Health and Human Services.
Graduating students consistently rate the UC Davis - Sacramento program highly for its rich learning environment, exposure to diverse patient populations, professional and nurturing faculty, rotation assignment flexibility, and the networking opportunities it provides.
