Each year, some 40,000 children are born with congenital heart defects in the United States; worldwide about 1.5 million children are affected.
Technology now permits cardiologists and surgeons to perform intricate corrections on newborns so that many of these children can lead normal, energetic and productive lives.
"It can be exceptionally difficult for families to be separated from their homes and from their other children for extended periods of time while caring for a child who is in the hospital. Having the choice to have their child hospitalized close to home will be a god send to many of these families," Dr.Raff said.
