Special Chemistry

Gerald Kost, M.D., Ph.D. (Director)

Rhonda Becker, M.P.A., M.T. (ASCP), (Manager)

Kathy Omand, M.T. (ASCP), (Supervisor)

The Special Chemistry Laboratory performs routine immunoassay and manual tests. The testing utilizes a variety of methodologies and instruments. Many of these tests are run in scheduled batches and may require more than one day to test. The majority of testing is performed on serum, although some tests require amniotic fluid or EDTA whole blood. The Special Chemistry section is staffed Monday through Friday, and University Holidays from 0800 to 1630.

Oncology tests - The concentrations of oncology tests in a given specimen may vary between different instruments and methodologies. It is important when monitoring a patient's test levels, that the patient's testing be performed by the same method. Oncology test methods cannot be used interchangeably.

Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), serum              Chemiluminescent Immunoassay (Bayer)
The AFP test's intended use is to aid in managing non-seminomatous testicular cancer when used in conjunction
with physical examination, histology/pathology, and other clinical evaluation procedures.

AFP, amniotic fluid                                   Chemiluminescent Immunoassay (Bayer)
Provide gestational age and clinical indication for testing. The amniotic AFP test is intended for use as an aid in
detecting open neural tube defects when used in conjunction with ultrasonography and amniography testing.

CA 125                                                      Enzyme Immunoassay (Abbott AxSym)
The CA 125 test is to be used as an aid in monitoring the response to therapy for patients with epithelial ovarian
cancer.

CA 27.29                                                   Chemiluminescent Immunoassay (Bayer)
The CA 27.29 test is intended for use as an aid in monitoring patients previously treated for Stage II or Stage III
breast cancer. The test is also intended for use as an aid in the management of breast cancer patients with
metastatic disease by monitoring the progression or regression of disease in response to treatment.

CA 19-9                                                     Radioimmunoassay (Fujirebio)
For Investigational Use Only

CEA                                                           Chemiluminescent Immunoassay (Bayer)
The CEA test is intended for use as an aid in the management of cancer patients in whom changing concentrations
of CEA are observed.

PSA                                                            Chemiluminescent Immunoassay (Bayer equimolar)
The PSA test in conjunction with DRE is intended for use as an aid in the detection of prostate cancer in men 50
years and older. This test is also further indicated as an aid in the management of patients with prostate cancer.
