Supervision and Performance of Autopsy
All autopsies will be supervised by a faculty attending pathologist. The autopsy may be performed by a pathologist/pathology resident with assistance of an autopsy room attendant, medical student or resident from a service other than pathology.
The completed consent and the medical chart must be received and reviewed by the attending pathologist prior to the autopsy.
Autopsy will begin within 24 hours of receiving completed consent; this time frame may vary on weekends.
The clinical attending and/or requesting physician, resident, intern or medical student will be notified by phone and/or pager by the pathology resident or attending faculty member and invited to witness the autopsy or review the findings.
Universal precaution will be employed at all times in the performance of an autopsy.
Tissue obtained from autopsies may be used for diagnostic, research, and education purposes.
