The apheresis section provides support to the adult and pediatric bone marrow transplant programs, in collecting adequate numbers of peripheral blood stem cells for transplantation, that meet all clinical, laboratory and regulatory standards. The apheresis director and two other members of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine also provide 24/7 consultation, execution and monitoring of therapeutic apheresis procedures for the  Department of Pediatrics, such as plasma and red cell exchanges, WBC or platelet reduction. Members of the apheresis section are involved in teaching pathology and other residents in the unique field of apheresis medicine, applications and appropriate use of this specialized therapeutic modality.
