Clinical Proteomics Core Lab: Mission

Recent advances in cytometry technology and computer software have made it possible to develop diagnostic systems that enable the detection and measurement of multiple analytes, simultaneously and quantitatively, in a single test sample.  Such multiplex capabilities will significantly enhance many areas of both basic and clinical research.  Importantly, multiplex modalities will be essential for translational research, which aims to move the discoveries of basic biomedical research into clinical applications.  The mission of the Clinical Proteomics Core is to provide intellectual and technical expertise, and instrumentation, for multiplex analysis of proteins in disease.  To accomplish this mission, the Core will interact closely with basic and clinical investigators to promote and facilitate translational research.  Dr. Paul Luciw (Director), and Dr. Imran Khan (Associate Director of Operations), have extensive experience with the multiplex microbead system technology (see literature references below).  Dr Kim Janatpour (Associate Director of Clinical Applications) has several years of experience as Director of Immunology at the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. 

Currently, commercial kits are available for detection and measurement of several groups of analytes (e.g., cytokines, chemokines, autoimmune antibodies, angiogenesis factors, neuroendocrine hormones, adipokines, cancer markers, etc).  Thus, the Core would serve clients who select specific kits for application to their research problem(s).  Analytes can be measured by the multiplex method in cell/tissue lysates, including biopsy specimens, and in serum, urine, saliva, etc.  Because Luminex provides uncoated microbeads and protocols for conjugation, the Core would also serve clients who need customized multiplex detection capabilities.  Core services are organized into four components: (1) analyte detection by commercial kits, (2) analyte detection by in-house kits, (3) client-driven custom assay development, and (4) specialty procedures e.g., ELISA and Western blot.
