Research Interests

The interaction between normal cells and their surrounding environment is important in maintaining tissue organization, controlling proliferation, and regulating cell motility. This is accomplished through the existence of a number of transmembrane receptors that interact with stromal extracellular molecules. One of these receptors, CD44, binds to the extracellular matrix component, hyaluronan. Dr. Afify’s major research area of interest is in studying hyaluronan and CD44 and their role in cancer.
