Forensic Fellowship Program

Description

The Sacramento county coroner's Office is a new state-of-the-art building of approximately 80,000 square feet. The forensic pathology fellowship is a comprehensive twelve-month program conducted primarily in the facilities of the Sacramento County Coroner-s Office located within a mile of the UC Davis Medical Center campus. The University Medical Center houses the largest level I trauma center in northern California and provides the coroner's office with a vast wealth of interesting cases from the throughout the state. The training program is administered by the pathology staff of Northern California Forensic Pathology, Medical Corporation, a private group of four full time forensic pathologist providing medicolegal autopsy services to the County of Sacramento. The residency program provides experience in forensic pathology including necropsies, scene investigation, toxicology, neuropathology, odontology, anthropology and court room testimony.

The Sacramento County Department of the Coroner employs 11 deputies, two Assistant Coroners and five clerical/administrative staff, serving a population base of over 1.2 million distributed between the City of Sacramento (approximately 360,000) and the surrounding county areas. The Department currently investigates over 5,000 deaths per year, of which approximately 1100 come to autopsy. The caseload currently includes between 130 and 150 homicides annually. During the course of the year, the fellow will spend approximately four weeks exclusively assigned to the forensic laboratory facilities. Exposure to the areas of forensic toxicology, serology, hair and fiber examination, toolmark and firearms examination, and related forensic sciences will be included in this experience. The fellow will be expected to become familiar with the basics of forensic odontology and anthropology, and analysis of case material in conjunction with consulting forensic odontologists and anthropologists will be part of the fellowship experience when possible.

Requirements

Applicants must be Board certified or eligible in anatomic pathology and eligible for licensure in the State of California.

Stipends

The current stipend is $42,000, including benefits provided through the University of California.
