Our CPE center offers Levels I & II CPE and Certified Educator’s training through ACPE.  As a Level I trauma center with a Children’s Hospital and many educational opportunities UC Davis provides dynamic clinical context for training. Our CPE program:

  • Encourages students to use their knowledge, gifts, and experiences while in CPE and to participate in shared learning experiences with others.
  • Provides opportunities for the students to serve as chaplains and provide interreligious and interfaith care to all persons in collaboration with a very dynamic and interdisciplinary community.
  • Offers many opportunities to build both collegial and caring relationships with staff.
  • Provides a context for student to explore specialization and completing a Level II project based on the student’s desire.
  • Is guided and influenced by the University of California, Davis Medical Center's mission, Principles of Community and its commitment to excellence in patient care.
  • Utilize learning methods include clinical case presentation and review (such as verbatim, critical incident report), didactic presentations, individual supervision, and group dynamics. 
  • Trains to draw insights from behavioral sciences and social conditions as they encounter a variety of human emotions, beliefs, and value systems.

Summer and Single Unit Internship

The summer CPE unit at UC Davis Medical Center provides an intensive introduction to pastoral care, pastoral identity and hospital ministry for seminary students, local ministers and lay ministers. It offers the participants the opportunity to experience professional and personal growth in the context of their educational and vocational development. Single units of CPE are offered each unit in conjunction with the resident program. Internships are non-stipend fulltime participation with the yearlong residents.  

  • Requirement:
    • No prior CPE required
    • Completed ACPE application
    • Screening interview
    • Completion of a minimum of one year seminary education

  • Tuition: $500
  • Stipend: None

Extended CPE Program (Not Offered 2016/2017)

This program is designed for care-provider professionals engaged in active practice of ministry or interested in continuing education and vocational enhancement.  The program is only offered periodically.  Decision  to offer will be posted by June 15 each year.  Please check the site regularly for updates.

  • Requirement: No prior CPE required
  • Dates: September-December and January-May
  • Tuition: $500 initial unit and $200 each consecutive unit
  • Stipend: None
  • Deadline: Applications are accepted and reviewed until all positions are filled.

Yearlong Residency

This year-long (4 unit) stipend program challenges CPE students to develop professional competency in ministry while integrating theological studies with hands-on ministry experience. This program is available to individuals who hope to specialize in chaplaincy services, are preparing for certification in related professional organizations or might be considering Supervisory CPE.

  • Requirements:
    • One unit of CPE preferred but not required
    • Completed ACPE Application
    • Master of Divinity degree or equivalent
    • Onsite interview with CPE screening committee (Preferred)
  • Stipend: $30,000 paid in 12 monthly installments without withholdings
  • Dates: August through August of the following year
  • Tuition: $500 initial unit and $200 each consecutive unit
  • Deadline: Applications are accepted and reviewed until all positions are filled

Second Year Yearlong Residency

This year-long (4 unit) stipend program continues challenging CPE students in the development of professional competency in ministry while integrating theological studies with hands-on ministry experience. This program is available to individuals seeking to specialize in chaplaincy services, are preparing for certification in related professional organizations or might be considering Supervisory CPE.

Palliative Care Residency

This 2nd Year CPE year-long (4 unit) stipend program challenges CPE students to develop professional competency in ministry while focusing theological studies with hands-on ministry for patients and their families facing life-threatening and/or chronic illness. This program is available to individuals who hope to specialize in Palliative Care, are preparing for certification in related professional organizations or might be considering Supervisory CPE.

  • Requirements:
    • Four units of CPE
    • Completed ACPE Application
    • Master of Divinity degree or equivalent
    • Onsite (Preferred) interview with CPE and Palliative Care Team screening committee
  • Stipend: $35,000 paid in 12 monthly installments without withholdings
  • Dates: August through August of the following year
  • Tuition: $500 initial unit and $200 each consecutive unit
  • Deadline: Applications are accepted and reviewed until all positions are filled

Supervisory Education Student

 

  • Requirements:
    • Four units of CPE (minimum of 2 Level II units preferred)
    • Board certification as a Chaplain or provide information that application to certification in progress
    • Ecclesiastical Endorsement
    • Ordination or Commission
    • Completed ACPE Supervisory Education Student Application
    • Master of Divinity degree or equivalent
    • Onsite interview with CPE screening committee
