Larynx

Tumors of the larynx (voice box) may present with hoarseness, difficulty breathing, or trouble swallowing.  Patients with these tumors may have pain in the throat or the ear.  Usually the examination will include looking at the voice box with a flexible endoscope placed through the nose.  If a tumor is suspected, an operation may be scheduled to evaluate the size and location of the tumor and to obtain a biopsy.

Treatment of tumors of the larynx is individualized to the patient, their desires, and the specific characteristics of the tumor.  Our department performs many cutting-edge laser surgeries on small laryngeal tumors, allowing removal of the tumor through the mouth without any incisions.  Larger tumors may need more aggressive surgery or treatment with either radiation or a combination of chemotherapy and radiation.  These tumors may spread to the neck and require surgery on the lymph nodes of the neck.  We work closely with our cancer colleagues in radiation and medical oncology to ensure patients get the best treatment possible, offering them the best chance of cure and the best function possible.
