Cochlear Implants
The Department of Otolaryngology has been providing comprehensive cochlear implant services for adults and children since 1992. This exciting technology allows patients who have little or no hearing the ability to perceive sound information by bypassing the damaged inner ear structures and stimulating the hearing nerve via small surgically-placed electrodes. Once the cochlear implant is in place it is custom-programmed to match the responses of each patient. Collaboration between otologists, audiologists, speech/language pathologists, teachers of the deaf and other rehabilitation specialists is important for successful cochlear implant use. All pre and post-operative services are provided here at the UC Davis Medical Center or in collaboration with a network of community resources.
