Excellence

For many years, U.S. News & World Report has ranked UC Davis among the nation's top 50 medical centers in orthopaedics. The magazine's Best Hospitals rankings recognize facilities that excel in treating patients with the most serious and challenging injuries and illnesses. UC Davis Medical Center regularly scores as the top hospital in Sacramento in the rankings as well.

Most of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery's faculty physicians are fellowship-trained and regularly make important contributions to new advances in clinical care and research, while also teaching the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons.

The department is also a key player in the world-renowned UC Davis Trauma Center, traditionally one of the busiest Level 1 trauma centers — those that provide the highest level of surgical care — in the United States.

UC Davis has a longstanding tradition of excellence in trauma care; its trauma center is named for one of the fathers of modern orthopedic trauma surgery, Michael Chapman, who served as a chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and authored a major four-volume reference guide regarded as a definitive source on orthopaedic surgery. The center's co-founder was F. William Blaisdell, acknowledged worldwide as the father of modern trauma care.

Multiple locations

Faculty in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery see patients at several Sacramento locations.

Our scope of outreach also extends to select UC Davis Medical Group primary care office sites in communities such as Roseville and Auburn, enabling patients who live outside the heart of Sacramento a more convenient location for office visits.

Our physicians are also participants in the UC Davis Telemedicine Program. This enables the clinicians to offer medical consults to those in rural populations that may not easily access our Sacramento location.

Many operations are performed in UC Davis Medical Center's surgery and emergency services pavilion area, equipped with the most sophisticated patient-care and information-technology resources. The ultra-modern surgical suites were added in 2010 as part of a $424-million expansion that created one of the most technologically advanced hospitals in the country.
