Orthopaedic Surgery offerings

Through the UC Davis School of Medicine, there are a variety of Orthopaedic Surgery classes offered for credit.  Please review the UC Davis General Catalog for a listing of these courses.

Acting internships/externships

The primary elective suggested for students considering orthopaedics as their career choice is the acting internship (UC Davis, OSU 464). In this elective, students function in much the same manner as an intern on the service, with ward, clinical and surgical responsibilities. Additionally, students are required to participate in in-house call. Because UC Davis Health System is an extremely busy trauma center, particularly in the summer months, this elective can be rather challenging, but it provides students with an excellent opportunity to expand their knowledge of orthopaedics. The elective also offers students the opportunity to learn about the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and to work with the faculty and residents.

The department offers the elective year-round for a minimum of four weeks and is flexible with starting dates due to the varying schedules of each school. Applicants applying for a clerkship should be prepared to indicate three blocks of time when they will be available. Confirming paperwork will specify the dates for which applicants have been accepted. There is no tuition charge if an applicant is currently enrolled at his or her school and paying tuition there. Applicants must provide documentation of malpractice insurance coverage, health insurance coverage, negative PPD within the past 12 months (by the dates of applicant's rotation) and MMR screening or immunization before the department considers an application to be complete. Note: The department requires a minimum of eight weeks' notification should an applicant choose to drop this elective and requests that the student's school issue an "F" grade or equivalent should the student fail to make the notification.

The department does not provide housing; however, a list of individuals who rent rooms to students at reasonable rates is available for interested students. Students are responsible for making arrangements. They are also responsible for paying for meals while working in the hospital.

For an application, contact Loretta Adams, residency coordinator, (916) 734-2807 or e-mail loretta.adams@ucdmc.ucdavis.edu. Positions are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Applications must be complete before the department schedules rotations.
