Overview 4th Year
The fourth year of the M.D. program features built-in flexibility to allow students to individualize their medical careers. Each student, with his/her advisor, will submit his/her proposed fourth year schedule, a minimum of 32 weeks of learning activities, for approval by the Fourth Year Oversight Committee. These learning activites may be selected from electives and may include 4 weeks special study module.
CRITERIA FOR THE
FOURTH YEAR FLIGHT PLANS
Students are required to take 32 weeks of Clinical Electives and take a Special Studies Module or complete a Scholarly Project.
- Additional weeks of Electives may be taken.
- Clinical Electives will count towards the required 32 weeks, only after a student has successfully completed 4 of their required 3rd year clerkships.
The following courses do not meet the criteria for the required 32 weeks of Clinical Electives:
- 498 - individual or group study
- 499 - Research, with exceptions made on a case-by-case basis.
- Any course taken out of the country (with exceptions for courses taken at a major university in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand, with departmental approval).
- Any course taken, which is not at a major affiliated hospital or away site - with departmental approval.
- No more than 8 weeks in a course with the same course number will count towards the 32 weeks.
- Community clinics: (i.e. Paul Hom Asian Clinic, Imani Clinic etc.)
- Teaching assistant positions.
Away Rotations: No more than 16 weeks of the required 32 weeks may be taken at away institutions (with exceptions made on a case-by-case basis).
