Transportation

Medical students: The basic student expense budget allowance covers the cost of maintaining a vehicle. These expenses include insurance, registration, gas, parking and tolls, and repairs. Also allowed in this budget category are two trips home.* Students with expenses over the budget allowance may document their actual costs.

  • Insurance – copies of car insurance policies
  • Repairs – copies of repair bills
  • Registration – copy of your current DMV registration
  • Gas – original receipts or a detailed mileage estimates showing where and how often you travel
  • Parking and tolls – original receipts required
  • Two trips home – transportation receipts and/or tickets

*In addition, fourth-year medical students have an added allowance in their expense budget for an estimated round-trip airfare ticket to the USMLE Step 2 Clinical Skills testing site in Los Angeles.

FNP/PA students: The cost of transportation is figured on an amount-per-mile basis. Appropriate documentation includes destinations, number of miles traveled and number of trips per month. The allowable mileage reimbursement rate is 48.5 cents per mile for travel during January and December 2007, and 50.5 cents per mile for travel after January 1, 2008. If the product of your total miles driven times the mileage reimbursement rate exceeds your budget allowance, this additional cost may be added to your student expense budget. Additional funding for these added costs may or may not be available.
