International applicants
You are considered an international applicant if you need a visa in order to reside and study in the United States. If you are a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, refugee or asylee, you will be considered a domestic applicant even if you currently reside outside the United States.
Prospective international medical students are required to complete the School of Medicine's Financial Statement to verify sufficient financial support to pursue their medical education at UC Davis. Non-residents of the United States are ineligible for financial aid, and should not expect to obtain financial aid after arrival at UC Davis. Therefore it is critical to secure an adequate, reliable and continuing source of funding for your entire course of study before deciding to come to the United States.
Estimated cost of attendance
Exact amounts for tuition and fees are usually finalized shortly before each academic year begins. All tuition, fees, and budget amounts are subject to approval by the UC regents and changes in federal, state and institutional policies, and may change without prior notice.
The figures listed below are estimates based on current costs and projected increases for the 2007–08 academic year. You should expect an increase in costs each year you study at the School of Medicine.
Estimated Minimum Costs for a Single International Student (in U.S. dollars):
$37,810 — TUITION & FEES [$12,245 non-resident tuition + $25,565 fees]
$21,586 — LIVING & OTHER EXPENSES [$2,303 books & supplies + $9,448 housing + $4,224 food + $2,693 personal + $2,918 transportation]
$59,396 — TOTAL FOR ONE YEAR [$37,810 + $21,586]
$237,584 — ESTIMATED FOUR-YEAR TOTAL (excluding increases) [$59,396 x 4]
Students who will be accompanied by family members are required to provide verification of funds at a higher amount than listed above. To the one-year total, add $4,800 for a spouse and $2,400 for each child. In addition, health insurance for all family members is essential and can cost several hundred dollars each month. Note also that child care is expensive; full-time child care may cost $600–$950 per month or more. Please consider these additional expenses when deciding whether or not your family will accompany you. You should also consider that the spouse of a student who comes to the United States as the student’s dependent may not be allowed to work.
Employment
Housing
Off-campus housing: Approximately 85% of the students enrolled at UC Davis live off campus. Apartment availability may be limited. In order to find suitable housing, plan to arrive in the Sacramento area at least three to four weeks before the term for which you have been admitted. You may wish to consult the UC Davis Community Housing Listing Service Web site for general information about costs and accommodations in the area.
Health insurance
Student health insurance is currently available through Western Health Advantage.
