Frequently asked questions
What are the requirements for admissions?
The school believes a medical student should have a sound background in the humanities and behavioral and social sciences as well as in the physical and biological sciences. Premedical requirements must be completed by January of the year of desired entry.
The following college-level courses are required:
- English: 1 year
- Biological Sciences, lower division (with lab): 1 year
- Biological Sciences, upper division (lab not required): 1/2 year*
- General Chemistry (with lab): 1 year
- Organic Chemistry: 1 year
(If two or more undergraduate courses are offered, the more rigorous option is recommended) - Physics: 1 year
- Mathematics (college-level math): 1 year
(College-level statistics fulfills a portion of the requirement.)
AP/CLEP credit is not acceptable for prerequisite courses. On-line, electronic, distance learning or correspondence courses will not be accepted.
* Upper division biological science requirement can be satisfied by one semester or two quarters of biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology or genetics. Admission to medical school requires that the applicant have an understanding of fundamental concepts of biomedical science. Although a biochemistry course is not absolutely required for admission, it is strongly recommended.
How do I apply?
Only one set of transcripts needs to be submitted. AMCAS will coordinate the verification and distribution of your application to the medical schools to which you are applying.
What is the deadline to apply?
Where can I find information about the status of my application?
Applicants are asked to refer to the Applicant Portal located at http://hs3applicant.ucdsom.ucdavis.edu/login/login.cfm
The applicant portal serves as the primary source of information about the status of your application. The information posted is based upon real-time decisions made by the Admissions Committee. Should you call the Office of Admissions the staff has access to the same information you see on the portal and is unable to provide you with additional information about the status of your application. Please refer to the attached 2009-2010 UCDSOM Admissions Cycle timeline found on the applicant portal for the timeframes for each segment of the admission cycle.

What types of letters of recommendation are required?
We request at least three but no more than six letters of recommendation from persons who know you well enough to evaluate your scholarly potential and promise as a physician. Professors (science and non-science), instructors, thesis advisors, and supervisors of special projects, clinical, volunteer or employment activities usually provide the most informative letters. These letters may be accompanied by an undergraduate school's premedical committee evaluation. Letters from teachers who do not know you beyond grades and class rank are discouraged.
You may waive your access to letters of recommendation under the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 01977, and other laws. Please refer to the Waiver of Access to Confidential Letters of Evaluation Form. If you have waived access to your letters through your school’s Pre-medical Advisory Committee or through the electronic letter service, it is not necessary to complete the waiver. Please have each letter author or the letter service include a signed copy or verification of having the Waiver of Access to Confidential Letters of Evaluation Form completed.
Once we have received the minimum required letters (three), the applicant portal will reflect that you have met the letter of recommendation requirement. However, if you are submitting up to 6 letters then our office will not complete your file until ALL letters are received and posted. The Admissions Committee will review the first six letters in the order that they are packaged or posted. We are unable to guarantee that the Committee will consider or review additional letters beyond the first six letters. Please note: No new letters can be added to an applicant file once the secondary application request is complete.
Instructions: Letters can be submitted via the AMCAS Letter Service. Please go to the following website for those instructions.
When will I know if I have been granted an interview?
Are you on a rolling admissions?
When will I know my final status?
Post-interview screening and decisions will be made beginning in October 2009 through April 2010. Following an interview and submission of the interview evaluations by faculty members and medical students the application is forwarded on to the Admissions Committee for admission recommendations followed by a review by the Dean of Admissions. Please refer to the Applicant Portal for the status of your application.
Will my application go through a Criminal Background Check (CBC)?
Only those applicants offered admission will have their applications processed through the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) CBC process. As a result, ALL offers of admission are CONDITIONAL until the Admissions Committee has received the report and reviewed its content for each admitted applicant. For more information about the process, please go to http://www.aamc.org/students/amcas/faq/background.htm
Note: It is suggested that applicants contact an attorney or Legal Aide representative to determine whether to disclose any information about felony or misdemeanor records as requested through the AMCAS application. The Office of Admissions is unable to answer any questions related to this subject.
