Focusing on conditions common in midlife

A long and healthy life is not only good genes and luck.  It's also a result of taking care of yourself.  If you're a woman in midlife, the Women's Midlife Assessment Program at the UC Davis Women's Center for Health can help you maintain wellness through holistic prevention and education.  Designed to meet the medical needs and concerns of women between the ages of 40 and 64, the program offers a comprehensive assessment, focusing on conditions common in midlife, such as perimenopause, menopause, heart disease, osteoporosis and depression. 

The program is part of UC Davis Health System, one of the leading academic medical centers in the nation at the forefront of the latest discoveries and best treatments.  Its hospital, UC Davis Medical Center, has been consistently ranked one of the best hospitals in the nation by U.S. News and World Report. The magazine also has ranked UC Davis School of Medicine as one of the top 20 primary care programs in the nation and one of the top 50 research institutions.

Assessing your health risk

Through a combination of physical examinations, medical consultations, laboratory work, screening tests and educational information, physicians from obstetrics and gynecology, cardiovascular medicine, internal medicine, family medicine, psychiatry and endocrinology work as a team to assess your health risks and to help you maintain optimum health.

Screening tests and laboratory work may include:

  • Complete blood panels
  • Mammograms
  • Pap smears
  • Bone density screening
  • Cholesterol screening
  • Thyroid screening
  • Immunizations

Special consultation and educational information can include:

  • Osteoporosis
  • Weight management
  • Sleep problems
  • Mental health
  • Cardiovascular risk assessment
  • Hormonal therapy, including bio identical
  • Nutrition education and information
  • Breast health
  • Sunscreen use
  • Sexuality
  • Urinary incontinence

When necessary, program staff arranges for other tests, such as an ultrasound or colonoscopy, and refers you to other specialty services, such as audiology, ophthalmology, rheumatology, urology, alcohol and other drug counseling, smoking cessation and stress reduction.

Program physicians also inform your primary care physician of exam and test results.  You leave with a written, personalized care plan that details the actions you need to take.

A visit to the Women’s Midlife Assessment Program can help you live a long, productive life.  You can refer yourself to the program, or ask your primary care doctor to refer you.  The program accepts most major health insurance, including Medi-Cal and Medicare.
