The Family Planning Center is led by a team of Obstetrician-Gynecologists trained in the subspecialty of Family Planning who are national and international leaders in women’s reproductive health. There is no other group of physicians in this region with the same level of training and expertise. 
 
At the UC Davis Family Planning Center, we believe that every woman deserves nonjudgmental, confidential, and compassionate attention to her unique needs throughout her reproductive life. We will help you decide which birth control options are best for you, in light of your lifestyle, family planning goals, and any medical conditions that you may have.  We also provide counseling and care for women in need of an elective abortion, treatment for miscarriage or fetal death, and termination due to medical reasons.

Emergency Contraception:

Emergency contraception is a safe and effective way to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or inconsistent use of regular birth control. These methods can be used within 120 hours (5 days) of unprotected sex.

Miscarriage Management

Having a miscarriage is a difficult experience. We understand that you need a compassionate ear along with physicians who can help you with the diagnosis. Depending on your situation, we offer several treatment options for miscarriage, including:

Treatment Options:

  • Expectant management – waiting to see if your body will pass the pregnancy on its own, with close follow-up
  • Medical management – giving you medication to help your body pass the pregnancy, with close follow-up to see how you are doing
  • Suction aspiration (D&C procedure) to remove the pregnancy

 

New Treatment Options:

Our physicians are leaders in research in medical treatments for miscarriage. Our team is currently conducting a study of new medical management options. Call our research office at 916-734-6846 for more information.

 

Complications:

Complications are rare in the cases of miscarriage treatment. However, if you have an unexpected situation, you can reach us at the UC Davis Medical Center with access to our specialists 24-hours a day, seven days a week.

Abortion Services

The UC Davis Family Planning Center is invested in helping every woman, regardless of her choice and circumstance.  We offer abortion services for women in the 1st and 2nd trimesters.  The types of treatment/procedures available to you depend on the maturity of the pregnancy and your medical history and needs.

 

Medical Abortion:

Applicable for: Pregnancy up to 10 weeks (70 days after your last normal period)

Information: The process involves using pills which cause the pregnancy to be passed from your body. Follow up by phone or office visit is required.

 

Surgical Abortion:

Applicable for: Pregnancy from 5 weeks (35 days after your last period)

Used for:

  • Termination due to Abnormal Pregnancy
  • Maternal health conditions
  • Elective Abortion

Information: In California, surgical abortions are an option from 5 to 24 weeks of pregnancy. The procedure takes approximately 5-15 minutes to complete and can be performed in our office or at the hospital, depending on your situation.  More advanced procedures typically require multiple visits.
