We believe that a healthy environment of care is an essential element in creating the context for engagement in the professional practice of nursing. A healthy environment of care is characterized by a high level of open communication, collaboration, engagement, trust, and respect among all team members. In this context nurses are empowered to truly be present with patients and families and to interact with colleagues to provide care consistent with both professional and ethical mandates. A healthy environment of care is actualized at UC Davis Health System through alignment with the six standards for establishing and sustaining healthy work environments identified by American Association of Critical Care Nurses (PDF).

These standards are:

  • Skilled communication
  • True collaboration
  • Effective decision making
  • Appropriate staffing
  • Meaningful recognition
  • Authentic leadership
