Christine Fonseca, R.N., B.S.N., O.C.N. (CN III Adult Outpatient Infusion Center)
I love working at UC Davis Medical Center and I feel very fortunate to have been hired here as a new graduate 14 years ago. I enjoy working in the area of oncology and adult infusion because I get to establish relationships with my patients when they come in week after week for their treatments. I enjoy educating the patients about their treatment, side effect management, and care of their central lines. I think outpatient infusion is a great place to work because it is a mixture of inpatient nursing and the ambulatory clinic. I get the best of both worlds!
I am grateful for the opportunities that UC Davis provides to its nurses. I get to take care of a challenging patient population. I am able to further my education through classes offered at Center for Professional Practice of Nursing (CPPN) and through conferences for which I am paid to attend through professional leave and educational reimbursements. I can visit other areas of the hospital through the Bridges to Excellence program. I have assisted with the training of other nurses and students as a preceptor. I shape policy and practice on the unit level and on system-wide committees. I participate in Professional Governance through the Ambulatory Nursing Governance Council, which is the ambulatory version of the unit-based council. UC Davis has allowed me to not only do the job for which I was hired, but has given me the opportunity to grow as a nurse, as an educator, and as a leader.
