DAISY Award
Congratulations to Red East
Red East D. Tumang was my nurse in the cardiothoracic unit (East 6) of UC Davis Medical Center between August 3 -10, 2016. His compassion and skills attending to my needs were tremendous. I had a triple bypass and mitral valve repair and I knew almost instantly that Red was overseeing my wellbeing with extraordinary focus and attention to detail. One morning when the physical therapy folks were about to come in to work with me, Red asked that they come back at a mutually convenient time for me as I had not slept that night. His practice of washing his hands before and after attending to me was nothing short of phenomenal and I was blessed not to have suffered a staph infection I believe because of his extraordinary patient centered care. When I asked a question, he was always attentive. When he brought me meds, he was exceedingly thorough in explaining in language I could understand what I was taking and why. Red is a nurse's nurse. His ethics were evident in the way he treated everyone he came in contact with who came to see to my physical and mental wellbeing. I admire his integrity, his desire to go to great lengths for his patients and others with whom he works. He shows professional and compassionate expertise in all his ministrations. I am blessed to have had Red as my nurse and I attribute my positive and quickly mending body to Red's skills and deep seated caring for his patients. I tell all who are interested of the great care I received at Red's hands and the good people at UC Davis. Thank you!
About the DAISY Award
The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses recognizes outstanding members of the nursing community and the very special work they do every day. It was established by the DAISY Foundation in memory of the extraordinary nursing J. Patrick Barnes received when he was hospitalized. (DAISY is an acronym for diseases attacking the immune system.) This nursing recognition award program offers patients, families, and professional colleagues a way to honor nurses for all they do.
