$25,000 GRANT TO ALLOW FREE CLINIC TO CONTINUE PROVIDING MEDICATIONS 
November 30, 2007 —  Clinica Tepati, a UC Davis student-run community health clinic that provides free health care, has received a $25,000 grant from the Bustos Lopez Family Fund of the Sacramento Region Community Foundation.

STENT INVENTOR JOINS UC DAVIS SCHOOL OF MEDICINE'S BOARD OF VISITORS 
November 1, 2007 —  Julio Palmaz, the physician widely credited with inventing the first commercially successful stent for opening clogged arteries, has been appointed to the UC Davis School of Medicine's Board of Visitors.

October 30, 2007 —  D. Matthew Fentress, a fourth-year student at the UC Davis School of Medicine, has received a $10,000, Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship from the American Medical Association Foundation.

UC DAVIS HEALTH AND TECHNOLOGY EXPERT NAMED TO NATIONAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE
October 18, 2007 —  Thomas Nesbitt, executive associate dean for clinical and administrative affairs at UC Davis School of Medicine, has been appointed to an expert panel on emergency communications that stems from recommendations made to Congress by the 9/11 Commission.

DERMATOLOGY RESEARCHER RECEIVES GRANT FOR NEW PHYSICIAN-SCIENTISTS
August 17, 2007 —  An assistant professor of dermatology at the UC Davis School of Medicine is among the recipients of a $375,000 grant awarded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute as part of its effort to ensure that young, promising physician-scientists have the resources they need to launch their careers.

ENDOWED CHAIR FOR UC DAVIS EMERGENCY MEDICINE ESTABLISHED
July 17, 2007 —  Joining a UC Davis Health System effort to support innovative research, teaching and patient care, the university's Department of Emergency Medicine has announced the creation of $1.5 million endowed chair in honor of a former faculty member and UC Davis School of Medicine graduate who passed away unexpectedly nearly a decade ago.

June 27, 2007 —  UC Davis medical student Karen Alfonso has been selected to receive the 2007-08 Janet Gordon Armour, M.D. Scholarship, which benefits an outstanding first-year female student pursuing primary care medicine.

May 24, 2007 —  Mark C. Henderson, a highly regarded clinician-educator and leader in general internal medicine education, has been named associate dean for admissions and outreach at UC Davis Health System.

EDWARD J. HURLEY, FORMER FACULTY MEMBER, ADMINISTRATOR OF UC DAVIS SCHOOL OF MEDICINE, DIES AT 76
May 16, 2007 — Edward John Hurley, one of the first faculty members and a former associate dean of the UC Davis School of Medicine, died Sunday, May 13.

March 29, 2007 —  A fourth-year student has been named as the winner of an annual scholarship provided to women medical students at the UC Davis School of Medicine.

March 29, 2007 —  Amir Abu-Khalil, a second-year medical student, has won the $1,250 Amin and Nancy Habbas Scholarship, established to help high-achieving students of Arab origin enrolled at the UC Davis School of Medicine.

UC DAVIS RESEARCHERS AWARDED MORE STEM CELL FUNDS
March 16, 2007 —  California's stem cell agency has awarded another pair of grants worth an estimated $5 million to UC Davis School of Medicine scientists conducting regenerative medicine research.

UC DAVIS OPENS NEW MEDICAL EDUCATION BUILDING IN SACRAMENTO
December 11, 2006 —  UC Davis Health System leaders and campus officials, along with students, faculty, legislators and community members, today dedicated a 121,000-square-foot education building and medical library in Sacramento. The new facility replaces older buildings on the Davis campus and serves as the school's new headquarters for medical training at all levels.

December 5, 2006 —  UC Davis School of Medicine has an approximately $35 million proposal in the works that will help increase the number of medical students it trains and establish the school as a statewide hub for medical telecommunications, all with an emphasis on improving health care for residents living in the rural and more remote areas of California.

October 11, 2006 —  The UC Davis School of Medicine ranked 44th among the nation's 123 medical schools in research funding from the National Institutes of Health in fiscal year 2005, up from 62nd place just five years ago.

SPRING BREAK 2006 RAISES $110,000 FOR LOCAL CLINICS
May 10, 2006 —  Spring Break 2006, a food and wine fundraiser for free community clinics in the Greater Sacramento area that serve the medically uninsured and underinsured, raised $110,000 April 1 at UC Davis Medical Center.

April 20, 2006 —  Roxanne Aga, a second-year medical student, has studied tuberculosis in Pakistan, on the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe and among the homeless in San Francisco. Now the 28-year-old UC Davis School of Medicine student has a new challenge.

UC DAVIS PHYSICIAN HONORED FOR PIONEERING EFFORTS TO IMPROVE HEALTH OF HISPANIC COMMUNITY
January 13, 2006 — Sergio Aguilar-Gaxiola, a professor of internal medicine at UC Davis School of Medicine and an internationally renowned expert on mental health in ethnic populations, was honored with a National Minority Health Community Leadership Award (Hispanic Community) from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Minority Health.

October 25, 2005 — In a rare appearance, Nobel Prize winner Edmond Fischer will deliver a talk as part of the 2nd Annual Edwin G. Krebs Lectureship in Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine on Tuesday, Nov. 15, at 4 p.m. in the Buehler Alumni Center's Alpha Gamma Rho Room at the UC Davis campus.

UC DAVIS NAMED NEW CENTER OF EXCELLENCE IN TRANSLATIONAL HUMAN STEM CELL RESEARCH
October 4, 2005 — With a $6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, UC Davis establishes a new Center for Pediatric Stem/Progenitor Cell Translational Research that will bring together investigators from institutions throughout the United States and Canada.

April 27, 2005 — Marc Schenker, a leading authority on occupational and environmental diseases and respiratory illness at the UC Davis School of Medicine, has received a research grant for more than $500,000 from the California Endowment to study the health of Mexican hired farm workers and their families.
