Alma mater recognizes family medicine chair Joan E. Baumer for distinguished career and hurricane relief work

(SACRAMENTO, Calif.) — The University of California, Davis School of Medicine  recognized alumna Joan E. Baumer, current chair of the family medicine department at John Peter Smith Health Network with its Alumni Humanitarian Award.

The award recognized Dr. Baumer's decades-long outreach efforts in women's health, substance abuse, sexual abuse, teen health and rural health care. The award also highlighted her recent efforts to actively lead several institutions in North Texas to provide health care, medicine and social services for thousands of evacuees from hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005.

Dr. Baumer graduated from the UC Davis School of Medicine in 1977 and has worked at the John Peter Smith Health Network in Fort Worth since 1998. The award was part of the UC Davis School of Medicine's celebration of the 35th anniversary of its first graduating class.
