| BACKGROUND: |
Bariatrics is the branch of medicine dealing with the causes, prevention and treatment of obesity. Obesity affects an estimated 58 million people in the nation. The gastric bypass operation has become the most common form of weight-reduction surgery in the U.S. It usually is reserved for people who have been unsuccessful in other weight-loss programs and are at least 100 pounds overweight. Studies have shown that bariatric surgery provides more than just cosmetic benefits. It can reduce major health risks such hypertension, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Surgeons Mohamed Ali and William Fuller lead a team that has performed more than 500 bariatric procedures. The UC Davis program is designated by The American Society for Bariatric Surgery as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence. Blue Cross of California has listed the program as one of its Centers of Expertise. |
| WHO: |
More than a dozen men and women who have had bariatric surgery will be modeling clothes before their friends, family and other fashion show attendees. Also on hand will be their bariatric surgeons and nursing staff. |
| VISUALS: |
The bariatric patients will each model three different sets of clothing: formal, business and casual attire. An onstage screen will feature “before” photos of each model. Emcees for the event will note each person's pre-surgery and current weights and provide a short biography as the former patients stroll across the stage to the beat of a DJ's tunes. |
