UC DAVIS MEDICAL CENTER RANKED AS ONE OF THE NATION’S TOP 50 HOSPITALS

July 8, 2005

(SACRAMENTO, Calif.) UC Davis Medical Center ranks among the top 50 hospitals in America in four categories, according to an annual survey published by U.S. News and World Report.

More than 6,000 hospitals nationwide were ranked, and only 176 placed in even one category.

UC Davis Medical Center ranked 21st for heart and heart surgery, up from 39th in 2004; 45th for kidney disease, 25th for ear, nose and throat; and 39th for orthopaedics.

Of the top 50 hospitals in the country, UC Davis Medical Center had the highest nurse-to-patient ratio — 3.0 registered nurses per patient bed. Only two other hospitals scored higher than 2.5.

UC Davis Medical Center’s nurse-to-patient ratio reflects its status as one of only 148 hospitals in the country to receive Magnet Nursing Services Recognition by the American Nurses Credentialing Center for excellence in patient care and nursing practices.

UC Davis Medical Center also earned perfect scores in the U.S. News rankings for key technology-related services and in patient/community services.

Only three other California hospitals ranked in the top 50 in heart and heart surgery, and two of them were UC medical centers, UCLA and UCSF.

This is the 16th year U.S. News has published its “America’s Best Hospitals” ranking. Each year it evaluates top medical centers in 17 medical specialties from pediatrics to geriatrics.

UC Davis Medical Center has consistently ranked among the best hospitals in the magazine’s survey. In past years, UC Davis Medical Center also ranked in the top 50 for neurology and neurosurgery; digestive disorders; geriatrics; cancer; urology; respiratory disorders; and rheumatology.
