TRIATHLON CHALLENGES KIDS TO BE HEALTHY AND HAVE FUN

UC Davis hosts the largest event of its kind in the country

August 8, 2005

WHAT: UC Davis Children’s Hospital and Kohl’s department store have partnered to sponsor the Davis Kids Triathlon, which is the largest triathlon for youth in the country. Proceeds benefit research, education and patient care programs at UC Davis Children’s Hospital.

WHO: More than 800 four-to-17-year-olds from throughout the region will swim, bike and run for health and fun. The distances are tailored to fit the various age groups so everyone can finish and earn a medal. A post-event expo includes live music, games, food and beverages. The UC Davis Trauma and Injury Prevention Program will be on hand to provide free bike helmet fittings and safety advice.

WHEN:

August 14 beginning at 8 a.m.

At 11 a.m., Kohl’s will present a check for $141,354. The donation came from proceeds of stuffed animal and book sales at Sacramento area Kohl’s department stores. Accepting on behalf of UC Davis Children’s Hospital will be a former patient who is also a triathlon participant and his physician.

WHERE: Schaal Aquatics Center on the UC Davis campus.

BACKGROUND: UC Davis Children’s Hospital is the region’s only comprehensive hospital for children. From primary-care offices to specialty and intensive care clinics, pediatric experts provide compassionate care to more than 74,000 children each year. UC Davis also offers the only Level 1 pediatric trauma center in northern California. Among the hospital’s supporters is Kohl’s Cares for Kids, a charity effort dedicated to health care for children.
