HISTORY:

UC Davis Medical Center and community firefighters first partnered in 1972 to establish the UC Davis Regional Burn Center after a devastating plane crash at a Sacramento ice cream parlor killed 22 people and severely burned dozens more.

Recognizing the need for critical burn care in the region, Sacramento fire captain Cliff Haskell created the Firefighters Burn Institute, which raises money for burn education, prevention, new equipment, patient care and research. More than 30 years later, Northern California fire fighters are invigorating their partnership with UC Davis with a $1 million gift to help build a new Regional Burn Center that will serve the critical burn care needs of the growing Sacramento region.

The new center will be double the size of the existing intensive care burn unit, providing a state-of-the-art, efficient patient care environment.
