September 21, 2005

(SACRAMENTO, Calif.) — "Healthy Lifestyles 2005: Empowering Women of All Cultures", a free community health summit featuring screenings, workshops and entertainment, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 15 at the UC Davis MIND Institute2825 50th St., Sacramento, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The health fair kicks off with a healthy aging walk and continues with informative workshops in Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Russian and Hmong languages. More than 80 information booths staffed with community-based organizations will provide valuable resources and free health screenings for more than 15 chronic conditions. An estimated 3,000 people are expected to attend.

Workshops will focus on heart health, chronic disease, depression, osteoporosis, cancer, nutrition, and healing through mind, body and spirit.

Screenings for diabetes, high blood-pressure, stroke risk, carotid artery, osteoporosis, unhealthy weight and body fat, dental problems, fall risk, hearing loss, memory loss, depression, respiratory problems and more will be conducted.

The summit will feature Mexican and Asian food, as well as sandwiches and salads. Also featured will be a Latin dance band, Taiko drummers, a lion dance, Hmong dancers, African-American gospel singers, Russian folk dancers and children’s activities.

“The summit is sponsored by the Center for Healthy Aging and it’s called ‘Empowering Women of All Cultures,’ but the truth is we have healthy lifestyle information here for men and the baby-boomers too,” said Martha Geraty, Director of Outreach for UC Davis Center for Healthy Aging.

Summit sponsors state Sen. Deborah Ortiz and Assemblyman Dave Jones will greet visitors at 9:30 a.m. Their welcoming remarks will be followed by a keynote speech, “Winning the Battle Against Chronic Disease,” by LaDonna White, associate professor of Family and Community Medicine at UC Davis School of Medicine.

“Since their inception, these summits have motivated thousands of individuals to make healthful lifestyle choices,” said Ortiz. “This October, each community member who takes advantage of this summit’s award-winning program will become empowered to take charge of his or her health.”

Both Ortiz and Jones point out that the event has had a powerful impact.

“The Healthy Aging Summit won the award for innovation and quality in health care from the American Society on Aging, and continues to grow and evolve to meet the needs of our region’s diverse population,” said Jones.

Transportation will be provided by the Asian Community Center with a bus every 30 minutes throughout the day from four locations in South Sacramento and Midtown.
