2003 NOBEL PRIZE WINNER IN CHEMISTRY IS INAUGURAL SPEAKER FOR JOSEPH SILVA JR. BASIC SCIENCE LECTURESHIP
January 30, 2006 — Peter Agre, the 2003 Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry, will be the inaugural speaker for the Joseph Silva Jr. Basic Science Lectureship, named in honor of the former dean of the UC Davis School of Medicine.

BIOPHOTONICS HEADQUARTERS DEDICATED
January 30, 2006 — A new science — biophotonics — has a new center of operations. Quarters for the National Science Foundation-funded UC Davis Center for Biophotonics Science and Technology were dedicated Monday in the Oak Park Research Building at 2700 Stockton Blvd.

FITZGERALD ELECTED AS REGENT OF AMERICAN COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS
January 30, 2006 — Faith Fitzgerald, professor of medicine and Assistant Dean of Humanities and Bioethics at UC Davis Health System, has been elected as a Regent of the American College of Physicians.

ROSEVILLE, CALIF., ADVOCATE FOR KIDS WITH CANCER ONE OF THREE FINALISTS IN NBC “GODMOTHER” CONTEST
January 18, 2006 — Since her five-year-old son, Keaton, died of neuroblastoma in 1998, Robyn Raphael of Roseville, Calif., has worked tirelessly to help other children with cancer. Over the last seven years, the nonprofit organization she established in her son's memory has raised more than $500,000 for pediatric cancer research and programs.

UC DAVIS PHYSICIAN NAMED TO NATIONAL INFECTIOUS DISEASE COMMITTEE
January 18, 2006 — Former UC Davis School of Medicine Dean Joseph Silva has joined the ranks of expert civilian physicians and scientists serving on the Armed Forces Epidemiological Board, an 18-member committee providing advice to the Department of Defense on the prevention and control of diseases and injuries among military men and women.

UC DAVIS PHYSICIAN HONORED FOR PIONEERING EFFORTS TO IMPROVE HEALTH OF HISPANIC COMMUNITY
January 13, 2006 — Sergio Aguilar-Gaxiola, a professor of internal medicine at UC Davis School of Medicine and an internationally renowned expert on mental health in ethnic populations, was honored with a National Minority Health Community Leadership Award (Hispanic Community) from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Minority Health.

M.I.N.D. INSTITUTE LAB FOCUSES ON GENETIC CAUSES OF COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENTS
January 9, 2006 — Discovering how the brains of children with neurodevelopmental disorders differ from those of their typically developing peers is the focus of the new Cognitive Analysis and Brain Imaging Laboratory at the UC Davis M.I.N.D. Institute.

February 24, 2006 — Researchers from the UC Davis M.I.N.D. Institute are seeking children with autism, developmental delay and normal development for a study that will investigate how nighttime sleep may affect their daytime behavior.

February 16, 2006 — Nearly one-third of human genes are responsible for making cell-wall proteins, half of which are gatekeeper molecules called ion channels.

CALCIUM AND VITAMIN D SUPPLEMENTS OFFER MODEST BONE IMPROVEMENTS, NO COLORECTAL CANCER BENEFITS
February 16, 2006 — The results of a major clinical trial of the Women's Health Initiative has found that calcium and vitamin D supplements in healthy postmenopausal women help preserve bone mass and prevent hip fractures in certain groups, including older women, but the supplements do not prevent other types of fractures or colorectal cancer.

UC DAVIS PHYSICIANS STUDYING HEPATITIS C TREATMENT RESPONSE RATES
February 7, 2006 — In one of the first hepatitis C studies in the country focused specifically on the Latino community, UC Davis Medical Center researchers are taking part in a national effort to evaluate response rates in Latino populations when two hepatitis C anti-viral treatments are used in combination.

WOMEN'S HEALTH INITIATIVE STUDY FINDS LOW-FAT DIET DOESN'T REDUCE CANCER, HEART DISEASE OR STROKE
February 7, 2006 — The largest study ever conducted to determine whether a low-fat diet prevents heart disease or cancer in women found the diet had no effect.

STUDY FINDS SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION IN RESPIRATORY ILLNESSES IN BABIES BREASTFED SIX MONTHS VS. FOUR
February 6, 2006 — Babies fully breastfed for six months are less likely to suffer from respiratory illnesses in their first two years than babies fully breastfed for only four months, according to research conducted by investigators at UC Davis Children's Hospital, the University of Rochester and the American Academy of Pediatrics, Center for Child Health Research.

February 2, 2006 — Stephanie R. M. Bray, a fundraising professional with more than 15 years of experience with local, regional and national nonprofit organizations, has been named development officer for UC Davis Cancer Center.

TRAINING AMBASSADORS FOR HEALTHY HEARTS
February 2, 2006 — In observance of National Wear Red Dress Day — a day when Americans nationwide will wear red to show their support for women's heart disease awareness — community leaders from throughout the Sacramento area will learn about heart disease so they can return to their own community to reduce the risk in women most at risk.

March 30, 2006 — UC Davis Health System officials today announced the appointment of William McGowan, chief financial officer of UC Davis Health System, as acting chief executive officer of UC Davis Medical Center.

UC DAVIS STUDY SHOWS GRAPE SEED EXTRACT MAY BE EFFECTIVE IN REDUCING BLOOD PRESSURE
March 26, 2006 — Grape seed extract lowered the blood pressure of patients who participated in a UC Davis study of the benefits of the supplement on people with high blood pressure.

TOP CANCER ORGANIZATIONS LAUNCH FIRST ONLINE PORTAL OF ASIAN LANGUAGE CANCER INFORMATION
March 24, 2006 — The Asian American Network for Cancer Awareness, Research and Training and the American Cancer Society have launched a searchable online database of Asian language cancer materials.

UC DAVIS STUDY WITH MICE LINKS THIMEROSAL WITH IMMUNE SYSTEM DYSFUNCTION
March 21, 2006 — A team of cell biologists, toxicologists and molecular bioscientists at UC Davis has published a study connecting thimerosal with disruptions in antigen-presenting cells known as dendritic cells obtained from mice.

GOLF TOURNAMENT TO BENEFIT UC DAVIS MEDICAL EXCHANGE PROGRAM
March 17, 2006 — An organization of students and faculty physicians at the UC Davis School of Medicine that is dedicated to exchanging medical knowledge with medical schools abroad is seeking entrants for a benefit golf tournament on June 11 at the Lincoln Hills Golf Club.

HOSPITAL CHILD ABDUCTION SUSPECT ARRESTED
March 7, 2006 — UC Davis police late Monday night issued an Amber Alert and then successfully apprehended the suspect in a parental abduction from the pediatric ward of the UC Davis Children's Hospital.

March 6, 2006 — Christopher P. Evans, a member of the UC Davis School of Medicine faculty since 1997, has been appointed chair of the Department of Urology.

April 10, 2006 — UC Davis was officially notified today that it is among 16 nonprofit institutions around the state receiving the first stem cell grant funding from California's Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) since the agency was created by the passage of Proposition 71 in 2004.

May 25, 2006 —  The UC Davis Center for Health and Technology received the President's Award for the Advancement of Telemedicine from the American Telemedicine Association at its 11th annual international meeting in San Diego in May.

SPRING BREAK 2006 RAISES $110,000 FOR LOCAL CLINICS
May 10, 2006 —  Spring Break 2006, a food and wine fundraiser for free community clinics in the Greater Sacramento area that serve the medically uninsured and underinsured, raised $110,000 April 1 at UC Davis Medical Center.

June 30, 2006 — AcademyHealth, the national organization for health services research and policy, has honored Richard L. Kravitz with its 2006 “Article-of-the-Year” award for his lead authorship in an article about direct-to-consumer drug advertising.

June 28, 2006 — Enjoy a family-oriented bike ride around Lake Natoma in Folsom on Saturday, Aug. 19, and help support three worthy programs: the Triumph Fitness Program for Cancer Survivors at UC Davis Cancer Center, the Lance Armstrong Foundation supporting cancer research and survivorship programs, and the Davis Phinney Foundation supporting Parkinson's Disease research.
