UC DAVIS PROFESSOR RECEIVES AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY'S HUMANITARIAN AWARD
March 15, 2004 — Moon S. Chen, Jr., professor of epidemiology and preventive medicine at UC Davis School of Medicine and Medical Center and head of the UC Davis Cancer Center's Cancer Control and Prevention Program, has received the American Cancer Society's Humanitarian Award.
HEAD-SHAVING TO BENEFIT CHILDREN TREATED AT UC DAVIS CANCER CENTER

April 21, 2004 — The overall cancer death rate for African-American males would drop by nearly two-thirds — without any other intervention — if their exposure to tobacco smoke was eliminated, a new study suggests.

May 21, 2004 — The fight against cancer must be ever vigilant. Football Hall of Famer and former Oakland Raider Jim Otto and his wife Sally will be leading that charge during Otto's annual "Swing at Cancer" Celebrity Golf Classic on June 27 and 28.
COLOR-BLIND MALES, EVEN THOSE WHO ARE MILDLY COLOR BLIND, SOUGHT FOR VISION STUDY
May 19, 2004 — Researchers in the UC Davis Department of Ophthalmology are seeking color-blind males, even those who are mildly color blind, for a study on color vision.

June 25,2004 — Football Hall of Famer Jim Otto and his wife, Sally, will host 37 sports legends at the annual Jim Otto Take A Swing At Cancer Celebrity Golf Tournament at the Auburn Valley Country Club.
WHEN COMBINING NEW ORAL ANTI-CANCER AGENTS WITH STANDARD CHEMOTHERAPY, TIMING MAY BE CRUCIAL
June 5, 2004 — Timing may be everything when it comes to combining the new-generation oral, molecularly targeted anti-cancer agents with standard chemotherapy drugs, UC Davis Cancer Center researchers reported Saturday at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncologists.
LUNG CANCER PATIENTS IN JAPAN, UNITED STATES REACT DIFFERENTLY TO THE SAME CHEMOTHERAPY REGIMEN
June 5, 2004 — A chemotherapy regimen commonly used to treat non-small cell lung cancer is both more effective and more toxic in Japanese patients than in American patients, researchers reported Saturday at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncologists.
NOVEL THERAPEUTIC BORTEZOMIB MOVES TO PHASE II TRIAL IN LUNG CANCER PATIENTS
June 5, 2004 —A three-drug combination including the novel molecularly targeted agent bortezomib, the first drug in its class, proved well-tolerated and showed promising efficacy in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer, according to phase I trial results reported Saturday at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncologists.

June 1, 2004 — Men who are on active surveillance or "watchful waiting" for prostate cancer may be eligible to enroll in a UC Davis Cancer Center clinical trial of genistein concentrated polysaccharide, or GCP, a food extract derived from soybeans and shiitake mushrooms.

ARE PHYSICIANS OVER-PERFORMING COLONOSCOPY?
August 16, 2004 — Many physicians appear to be performing more "surveillance" colonoscopies than expert groups deem necessary, according to results of a National Cancer Institute-funded study published in the Aug. 17 issue of Annals of Internal Medicine.

September 20, 2004 — Performing breast reconstruction surgery at the time of mastectomy does not delay post-operative chemotherapy for women with breast cancer, according to the first study designed to answer the question.

October 22, 2004 — Low-income Asian and Pacific Islander children in California are becoming overweightat an alarming rate — and will soon catch up to low-income white, black and Latino children in the proportion who are overweight or obese, according to research reported today at the 5th Asian American Cancer Control Academy.
