LAWRENCE LIVERMORE, UC DAVIS ANNOUNCE CANCER COLLABORATION

WHAT: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and the UC Davis Cancer Center are announcing a major collaboration to fight cancer. The two institutions have created an integrated cancer program to accelerate discoveries that help prevent, diagnose, and treat cancer, the nationÕs second leading killer. The affiliation brings together the strengths of Lawrence Livermore in biomedical technology and genomics with the basic science and cancer research capabilities of the UC Davis Cancer Center. At least a dozen projects are already under investigation.

WHEN: 10: 30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 2. A media tour of the lab follows at 11 a.m.

WHERE: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore. Media representatives need to arrange to pick up badges for entrance to the laboratory prior to the event. They should call Steve Wampler at (925) 423-3107 by Wednesday, Nov. 1, at 4 p.m. Reporters and photographers need to be U.S. citizens. They should meet at the Westgate entrance of the laboratory to be escorted to the press conference.

VISUAL OPPORTUNITIES: Reporters will be taken to facilities at the laboratory that will be involved in the cancer collaboration. These include the Center measures changes in DNA caused by environmental exposures to chemicals; a short-pulse laser laboratory, where researchers are developing a light that can detect and ultimately treat skin cancer; and the Biology and Biotechnology Research Program, where fiber-optic sensors the width of a human hair are being developed to diagnose cancer at its earliest stages.

DIRECTIONS : From Sacramento: Take Highway 5 south to Highway 205 (Tracy). Follow 205 until it becomes 580 west/Livermore. Take the Vasco Road South exit off of Highway 580. Go 1.5 miles until you reach Westgate Drive, the fourth traffic light on Vasco Road. Take the first right to the Laboratory's Westgate Badge Office, which is the first building to the right before passing the guarded entrance.

From San Francisco: Take Highway 101 south to San Jose. Take the CA-92 exit to Hayward/Half Moon Bay. Keep left at the fork on the ramp, and take CA-92 east toward Hayward. Continue east on CA-92 over the San Mateo Bridge. Take the I-880 north exit toward Oakland. Take the I-238 north/I-580 east exit. Take the I-580 east exit on the right toward Stockton. Continue east on I-580 about 20 miles past Castro Valley, Dublin, Pleasanton and most Livermore exits. Take the Vasco Road South exit off of Highway 580. Go 1.5 miles until you reach Westgate Drive, the fourth traffic light on Vasco Road.
