COMMUNITY ACCESS EXPO SET FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

(SACRAMENTO, Calif.) -- Persons with physical disabilities or members of their families are invited to attend a free Community Access Expo at the UC Davis Adaptive Sports Medicine Clinic on September 6 from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Lawrence J. Ellison Ambulatory Care Center, 4860 Y Street, room 3030C, Sacramento.

Stacy Shoemaker, chief resident in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, says the exposition will introduce persons with disabilities to a range of sports, activities and services available in the community Ð from adaptive physical education programs to driving programs and research projects.

"After patients go through rehabilitation, they usually wonder Ôwhat now?Õ Often the hardest part is restoring ties to the community. WeÕve found itÕs helpful to start with sports because there is always a social side to athletics," Shoemaker says. "ItÕs a wonderful way to get involved."

The Adaptive Sports Medicine Clinic is held the first Wednesday of every month from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Ellison Building under the direction of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation sports faculty assistant professors Vivian Ugalde and Brian Davis.

The Adaptive Sports Medicine Clinic was started by physical medicine and rehabilitation residents a year ago. The goal of the clinic is to promote athletic and recreational participation among people with disabilities. Participants can schedule an individual evaluation, try out new equipment and attend group seminars on topics such as nutrition and exercise physiology.

The clinic is free and open to the public. To register, call (916) 734-6306.
