UC DAVIS MEDICAL CENTER RANKS AMONG AMERICA'S BEST HOSPITALS

(Sacramento, Calif.) — UC Davis Medical Center ranks among America's Best Hospitals in six of 17 medical specialties, according to an annual survey published in the July 17 issue of U.S. News & World Report.

UC Davis Medical Center ranked among the top 50 hospitals in the nation in the following areas: digestive disorders (39th), geriatrics (37th), hormonal disorders (23rd), kidney disease (33rd), respiratory disorders (22nd), and rheumatology (38th).

For the annual survey, U.S. News & World Report identified those hospitals throughout the nation that provide outstanding medical care. Most of these hospitals are tertiary-care hospitals or major medical centers that have a teaching mandate and provide comprehensive, state-of-the-art care, although a number of hospitals appear in the rankings that are not teaching hospitals.

The rankings are tallied using a three-part model that combines reputation, death rate, and a set of other medical information that includes the number of procedures a hospital performs in a particular specialty, the number of nurses for each patient, and the number of important kinds of medical technology that are available.

Information about an institution's reputation is based on a rolling three-year survey of physicians who are board-certified in the relevant specialty. Each year, 150 physicians per specialty are selected at random and asked to name the five hospitals they consider the best in their respective specialty, without considering cost or location.

Reputation alone determines rank in ophthalmology, pediatrics, psychiatry and rehabilitative medicine because mortality data are absent or irrelevant.

UC Davis Medical Center consistently ranks among the best hospitals in the nation. Over the past three years, the magazine has named 12 medical specialties at UC Davis among the best in the nation. These include cancer, hormonal disorders, endocrinology, otolaryngology, orthopaedics, neurology, pulmonary disease, urology, digestive disorders, geriatrics, kidney disease and rheumatology.
