NATIONAL ASIAN-AMERICAN CANCER INITIATIVE LAUNCHED AT UC DAVIS

WHAT:

Sacramento, the nation's most integrated city, is the new headquarters for a $7.4 million National Cancer Institute initiative aimed at erasing disproportionately high rates of certain cancers among Asian Americans. Details of the initiative will be shared with representatives of Sacramento's diverse Asian community, from Chinese to Cambodian, Hmong to Mien, at a morning news briefing at UC Davis Medical Center.

WHERE:

Camellia Cottage lawn and stage Alongside parking lot 3 across from UC Davis Cancer Center, 4501 X Street, Sacramento (Parking in lot 3 is free for vehicles displaying press credentials).

WHO:

Speakers include Moon S. Chen, Jr., director of the UC Davis Cancer Prevention and Control program and a recent appointee by President Bush to the National Cancer Advisory Board; Jerry Chong of CAPITAL (Council of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders Together for Advocacy and Leadership), and Susan Shinagawa, a singer-songwriter whose breast cancer was initially ignored because "Asian women don't get breast cancer."
