J. Paul Muizelaar, M.D.
|
Clinical/Research InterestsDr. Muizelaar, a nationally recognized expert in vascular surgery, head injury and trauma, is at the forefront of new treatments for stroke and head injury. He has been instrumental in equipping the ICU with some of the most advanced computerized-monitoring equipment available. Dr. Muizelaar's research includes clinical trials of presynaptic calcium-channel blockers for patients with severe head injuries and the use of hypothermia in the treatment of these conditions. He also is investigating new treatments for patients with cerebral aneurysms.
Dr. Muizelaar's clinical subspecialty expertise includes cerebral aneurysms, cerebral arterio-venous malformations, carotid endarterectomy, severe trauma, intensive care, cerebral blood flow and metabolism, facial pain, specific pain syndrome, spinal stenosis, and degenerative disease. His surgical expertise includes complex aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations, carotid and vertebral constructive surgery, skull-base tumors, hearing preservation in acoustic tumors, medulla oblongata and spinal DREZ lesions, peripheral nerve surgery including brachial plexus surgery, and spinal interbody fusion techniques. Dr. Muizelaar's research interests focus on the design, implementation and conduct of clinical trials in severe head injury and subarachnoid hemorrhage; monitoring cerebral blood flow, cerebral blood volume and metabolism with various techniques in patients; and metabolism and basic mechanisms and pharmacotherapy in experimental brain injury. |
