Division Descriptions
The Department of Neurological Surgery is a clinical specialty unit in the School of Medicine that provides direct patient care, training and graduate medical education, and basic and applied medical research programs. It serves as a referral center for neurosurgical patients in northern California. This classification is represented by a union.
Minimum Requirements
Advanced critical care experience and recent experience in care of neurosurgery patients. Master's degree in Nursing required. National Certification as an Acute Care NP preferred. CCRN and/or CNRN certification within one year of hire. Preference will be given to current UCD / UCDHS employees and current UCD / UCDHS layoff candidates.
Responsibilities
The Acute Care Nurse Practitioner working as a Nurse Practitioner II provides clinical expertise to acutely and critically ill neurosurgery patients and their families, is a resource person for health care providers, and participates in neurosurgical teaching programs. The position will primarily provide services to acute and critically ill inpatients on the neurosurgical service. Under standardized procedures the NP II will provide inpatient and outpatient clinical expertise to patients and their families, facilitate the clinical management of acutely and critically ill neurosurgery patients by collaborating with the attending physicians and appropriate members of the health care team, including evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of patients according to standardized procedures. The NP II acts as a resource person for patient families and health care providers, participates in neurosurgical teaching programs, and in the development and implementation of clinical research in the department
Requirements
Possession of valid California RN and NP license. NP Furnishing and DEA Number within six months of NP Licensure. Graduation from an accredited school of nursing. Passing of UCDMC Performance Demonstration, Policy Review and Medication Exam. ACLS preferred.

Skills, knowledge and ability to perform functions of NP II job description at a proficient level. Demonstrated ability for positive interaction with all members of the health care team, able to meet CN III competencies, able to pass UCDMC Medication Exam, I.V. Certification and CPR Certification, excellent verbal and written communication skills, judgment skills to effectively meet the needs of patients, self direction and organizational skills to function in an independent role, ability to apply relevant theories and concepts to clinical practice, ability to cope with personal stress experienced by health care team members, able to lift 25 pounds, see well enough to read gauges and identify injuries. This position is subject to a criminal background investigation.
