Child neurology
The child neurology inpatient consultation service evaluates and manages children with a wide range of acute and chronic neurological problems including epilepsy, metabolic or genetic disorders, neuromuscular disease, autistic spectrum, neurodevelopment disorders and many other disorders. Inpatient care can also evaluate neurological complications of trauma, congenital heart disease and malignancies. Inpatient facilities include a pediatric ward, intensive care unit, special care unit and two neonatal intensive care units. Children with intractable seizures are admitted to the pediatric service for extended video electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring.
Adult neurology fellows staff three-month rotations in the pediatric unit, both inpatient and outpatient. Fellows from other departments, including pediatrics, child psychiatry, and physical medicine and rehabilitation, also have rotations on the service. The on-call neurology fellows cover the pediatric emergency room.
Outpatient consultation is available at UC Davis Medical Center clinics, the outpatient clinic at Shriners Hospital for Children and outlying clinics with video medicine services. Daily child neurology outpatient clinics are located at the UC Davis M.I.N.D. Institute.
General neurology clinics and specialty clinics are devoted to patients with autistic spectrum and neurodevelopment disorders, Down syndrome, epilepsy (ketogenic diet and vagus nerve stimulator protocols) and neuromuscular diseases. Children with autistic spectrum disorders and other neurodevelopment disorders are evaluated by a multidisciplinary team consisting of child neurologists, developmental pediatricians, psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists and behavioral specialists. A variety of research programs complement the clinical assessments. For more details visit the UC Davis M.I.N.D. Institute Web site.
