The UC Davis M.I.N.D. Institute conducts medical investigations of neurodevelopment disorders. The institute houses clinical and research sites for the study of these disorders, including autism. Clinics and faculty offices for child neurology, child psychiatry, developmental pediatrics and pediatric genetics are also located at the institute.
In addition to the UC Davis Medical Center, neurology residents participate in the clinical and training programs of the Department of Veterans Affairs located at the Mather VA hospital. The VA has an outpatient facility and a 45-bed-state-of-the-art inpatient facility located approximately 15 minutes from the medical center. Lifestyle in the Sacramento Metropolitan Region
Sacramento is 80 miles east of San Francisco and 90 miles west of Lake Tahoe. Most major ski areas in California, including Squaw Valley, are located near Lake Tahoe. A variety of recreation environments, including the Monterey Coast, Yosemite Valley and others are within a few hours drive. The Pacific Ocean is two hours west, and the wine-producing Napa Valley is 45 minutes away.
In addition to UC Davis, three community colleges and one state university are located in the metropolitan area. Sacramento brings many outstanding performing groups to the Sacramento Civic Center in addition to a wide array of local theatre, ballet, opera companies and symphony orchestra. It is the home of the world's largest jazz festival, held annually on Memorial Day weekend in historic Old Sacramento. This event brings to the area many national and international jazz groups, all outstanding musicians. There are also museums and various local performing groups. The Mondavi Center on the UC Davis campus includes a large concert hall where world-class orchestras, dance groups and solo acts perform.
