Dr. Asmuth's research has primarily been in the area of HIV/ AIDS Pathogenesis and Treatment and HIV/HCV Co-Infection Pathogenesis and Treatment. His funding has included the Adult AIDS Clinical Trials Unit, the UTMB Small Grants Program, the UTMB President's Cabinet Award, a National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Contract, and currently a K23 mentored research award from the National Institute of Health.

The K23 Mentored Research Award has focused on effect of HIV infection on host cell cycle regulatory machinery. With the collaboration of R. Allen White, PhD of the Biomathematics Department of the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX, Dr. Asmuth is measuring the duration of the phases of the cell cycle in both an in vitro model using HIV-infected normal lymphocytes and an ex vivo model using peripheral blood mononuclear cells and lymph node cells from HIV-infected subjects.
