What is our research?
If you have never participated in research, here is what to expect . . .
With over 40 research studies currently underway, we rely on the invaluable assistance provided by the families that participate in our studies. Currently, people of all ages are being accepted for clinical research studies.
Each research study at the UC Davis MIND Institute is unique and the potential benefits to research participants may include:
- Feedback from an expert on the development of each study participant
- Results from standardized assessments
- A picture of your brain
- Invitation to the annual Research Thank You Party
- Extra school credit for you or your child
- Possible compensation for your time or travel reimbursement
- The knowledge that your family is helping find the causes and potential treatments for neurodevelopmental disorders
Participating in a research study can involve many different activities. Depending on the study, kids and their families may be asked to:
- Wear funny hats with wires for an EEG
- Play computer games
- Play games either indoors or outdoors
- Wear special stickers
- Donate biological samples such as spit, blood, or hair
- Participate in brain scans, such as fMRI or MRI
Typically the time commitments for research participants involve 1 - 3 visits. Appointments can be made Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Occasionally, scheduling accommodations might be possible.
Research studies do not include the following:
- Ongoing clinical care, including recommendations or evaluation of current medications
- Full diagnostic evaluations
- Evaluations of your entire family. Only those members that are eligible for the study will complete the research protocol.
- Specific blood tests to accommodate questions outside the research protocol
- Individual case or family studies
- Studies do not become a part of permanent medical record unless the study is a drug or device trial
- Unless required by a specific study, an MRI is not provided
- Though our clinicians may provide feedback on yours or your child's development, we do not work directly with school districts, primary care physicians, behavioral or speech therapists, etc.
