Middle Childhood Study - Frequently Asked Questions
We have moved away from the Sacramento Area - can we still participate?
Yes, we will cover the cost of your travel to the MIND Institute to participate in the middle childhood portion of the APP. We will also cover the cost of your stay in a hotel and meals during your testing period. Critical to the success of this project is to have as many families who participated in early phases of this study to continue to participate in this new phase. So, every family counts! And we will do everything in our power to insure that it is not a financial burden for you to take part in the study.
What happens if my child is not able to have an MRI scan while awake?
If the MRI is not successful, the additional behavioral testing that will be carried out is still extremely valuable. However, we have had very good success with scanning children while they are awake, even with kids with developmental disabilities. A Behavior Analyst will work with your child to develop an individualized program that will help her/him to enter the magnet and have a successful scan. Your child will be able to watch one of their favorite videos during the scan which helps them stay calm and still.
What if I only participated in the first APP session and have not come back since?
We want you back! The information that was collected during the first year that your child participated in the APP can be compared with the data collected in this middle childhood phase of the study. These two time points are critical and will add to the data from the children that have been evaluated on multiple occasions.
