School of Medicine — Colleges
The college system was introduced at the UC Davis School of Medicine in 2003 to promote an appreciation of both benefits and responsibilities of being part of a supportive professional community.
In order to better support its 400 students - academically, emotionally, and socially - UC Davis School of medicine organizes students into four distinct "colleges." The college model offers medical students more peer interaction, with formal and informal actvities bringing all four years into close and frequesnt contact.
Each college - which students are assigned to on a random basis in their first year - is headed by two of eight College Directors: Amerish Bera/Colleen Sweeney, Jane Yeun/Randall Lee, Tonya Fancher/Jorge Garcia, Don Hilty/ Regina Gandour-Edwards. In addition, each college also has a group of College Faculty members from a range of medical specialties, each of whom will advise students on a one-on-one basis throughout their four years of medical school. Finally, the colleges are divided into "families" consisting of four students and a College Faculty for smaller group interaction.
College Directors are responsible for writing students' Medical Student Performance Evaluation Letters at the end of their third year. Directors also make themselves available to students by holding office hours in the Student Commons and planning events for college classes.
The College Faculty play an important role in helping students to recognize their personal interests, strengths, and areas of improvement. As students advance in their training, the College Faculty support students periodically reviewing their progress, selecting elective rotations and connecting to experiences and faculty to assist students in career planning.
