Changes to UC Davis Health’s participation in the Western Health Advantage network
Effective January 1, 2018, UC Davis Health is modifying its participation in the Western Health Advantage (WHA) commercial health care network.
For more information, please see the statement below and the frequently asked questions posted on this page.
UC Davis Health will provide primary and specialty care services to WHA’s employer group and individual plan members until December 31, 2017. The health system intends to be available to provide specialty and hospital care to all WHA members after December 31, 2017.
However, UC Davis Health primary care providers will no longer be available through WHA’s commercial health insurance products beginning January 1, 2018.
These changes will not apply to UC employees (as well as UC retirees and family members) who currently receive coverage through WHA. For more information, see the Frequently Asked Questions page.
Why things are changing
The decision to close our primary care provider group to WHA members was not made lightly, and it follows extensive due diligence, discussion and review with both WHA management and University of California leadership.
After months of analysis, we concluded that our most prudent financial strategy was to modify participation in WHA’s commercial network. With today’s health care environment so challenging and uncertain, we cannot risk our ability to continue providing high-quality care to every patient we serve.
We remain dedicated to our role as inland Northern California’s only academic medical center and its only level 1 trauma center, serving more than 6 million residents throughout the region. Our health care services are available through contracts with approximately 30 health plans.
For impacted members, UC Davis Health is committed to making the transition to a new primary care provider as seamless as possible. These members will have an opportunity to:
- transition to another provider group in WHA’s network, or
- enroll in a different health plan during upcoming open-enrollment periods.
Services for impacted WHA members will continue unchanged through the end of 2017.
For more information about transitioning to another provider group in WHA's network, please contact your employer’s benefits office or your health insurance broker, or direct questions to Western Health Advantage Member Services at 916-563-2250 or 888-563-2250.
