Patricia is entering her fourth year in the graduate school and sixth year in the program. She has begun her thesis work on examining microcircuitry in septic shock. She is using an intravital microscope system developed by Dr. Tony Cheung's laboratory (her mentor) to study the conjunctival microcirculation during sepsis as well as resolution of sepsis. She will study the effects of various sepsis treatments on the microcirculation, with the hypothesis that the effectiveness of various treatments will be reflected by improvement/lack of improvement in the microcirculation.

Recent Graduates

Heather Collins-Schramm - Undergraduate Institution: UC Davis
Heather completed the Physician Scientist Training Program in 2006 and is entering the second year of the Vanderbilt Pediatric Residency Program. Her thesis work developed a rapid method for looking at microsatellite allele frequency differences between populations and used this method to identify markers with large differences between ethnicities. These studies have led to progress in the application of Mapping by Admixture Linkage Disequilibrium (MALD) to complex genetic diseases.

Peyman Golshani
(Note: M.D. completed at UC Irvine for family reasons). Peyman's thesis research was in the mechanisms that underlie the formation of specific synaptic connections in the mammalian central nervous system. Using whole-cell patch clamp recordings of neurons in in-vitro brain slices, he explored the maturation of the corticothalamic synapse, at both the single synapse and network level.

Ramy Hana - Neurosciences Graduate Group
Undergraduate Institution: UC Berkeley
Ramy completed the Physician Scientist Training Program in May 2005 and is now entering his second year of Residency Training in Internal Medicine at UCLA.

Manu Hedge - Neurosciences Graduate Group
Undergraduate Institution: Claremont McKenna College
Manu is in the Neurology Residency Program at UCLA
(3rd year). Manu's researh examined intracellular pH regulation in malignant gliomas, specifically, the type 1 sodium/proton exchanger (NHE1) and the mechanisms of apoptosis in these tumor cells.

Phil Huang - Biomedical Engineering Graduate Group
Undergraduate Institution: UC San Diego
