Message from the Vice Chancellor and Dean
Physician-scientists play an extremely critical role in modern biomedical research and, ultimately, the advancement of human health. They are uniquely trained to explore the potential applications of basic laboratory investigations and bring them to bear on the practical needs of their patients. Because of this, UC Davis has made a concerted effort to support the education and career development of dual-degreed physician-scientists. UC Davis provides a truly superb educational environment for M.D./Ph.D. students. We rank among the top 10 of the nation's comprehensive medical schools, which are particularly distinguished for overall excellence in their preclinical and clinical training programs. Our medical center is one of the best and busiest tertiary-care referral hospitals in the U.S. and serves as the hub of an extensive regional health system serving diverse patient populations from 32 counties throughout Northern California. Importantly, these outstanding clinical and educational assets exist as part of a major university campus that ranks in the top 20 for research activities and has exceptional breadth in biology and other medically relevant disciplines.
—Claire Pomeroy, M.D., M.B.A., Vice Chancellor for Human Health Sciences and Dean, School of Medicine
