Let’s Get Started is a 2 hour basic diabetes class for patients newly diagnosed or wishing to learn updated diabetes self-management skills.
Topics covered in the class include:
- Understanding basic diabetes physiology
- Basic nutritionion concepts
- Target blood sugar ranges
- Identifying high and low blood sugars
- The benefits of physical activity
Strategies for Control is a 2 hour practical workshop focusing on the tools and techniques needed to be your own diabetes self-manager. Learn how food choices, activity, medications and more impact your blood sugar numbers and how you can improve. Explore strategies for blood sugar monitoring. If you have a blood sugar meter please bring it to class with you. Discussion will include:
- When to test blood sugar
- What your readings mean
- High and low blood sugar
- Getting the most from monitoring your blood sugar at home
- Effects of daily choices on daily blood sugar control
Dining with Diabetes is a 2 hour class focusing on diabetes nutrition basics.Participants who take this class are eligible for the Dining with Diabetes: Advanced course.Taught by a registered dietician, this class covers topics such as:
- Basic carbohydrate counting
- Meal timing
- Portion control
- Label reading
- General eating away from home
Dining with Diabetes: Advanced is a 2 hour interactive diabetes workshop taught by a registered dietitian. Participants will learn advanced skills using example food records and then design personal menus aimed to meet their needs.
In Charge and In Control is a comprehensive diabetes series. Recognized by the American Diabetes Association for meeting the national standards for diabetes self-management education. The class takes place over four 2-hour and15-minute sessions or two 4-hour and 15-minute sessions. Topics covered in the class include:
Understanding diabtes physiology
- Self care
- Physical activity
- Foot care
- Complications and action plans
Recharge Workshop is a 2 hour workshop taught by a certified diabetes educator. The course reviews self-care strategies and participants will receive updates on diabetes information. It is designed as a follow-up course for patients who have attended multiple classes, including In Charge and In Control, and may need to be re-energized about their diabetes self care. Recognized by the American Diabetes Association (ADA).
RN Individual Diabetes Education is an appointment with a Registered Nurse specialized in diabetes education to address recurring hypo/hyperglycemia, monitoring strategies, medication management, initiation of insulin injections, or other diabetes related issues. The educator works with the patient and the primary care provider to customize a regimen that fits the individual’s lifestyle. Cost: Subject to Co-payment if required
Stress Management is a 2 hour class that provides information on:
- Discussion of the causes and effects of stress
- Practice in calming breathing exercises
- Learning mind-quieting meditation techniques
- Doing gentle body movements and stretches that help reduce stress
Preventing Diabetes - Living Healthy is a 2 hour class that provides information on:
- Risk Factors for developing pre-diabetes and diabetes
- Lifestyle strategies to delay or prevent diabetes
- Importance of nutrition and it's role in prevention
- Emphasis on physical activity and weight management
Easy Breathing Class is a 2 hour class facilitated by a registered nurse. The class aims to improve self-care of asthma and COPD by offering interactive education and discussion. Topics covered will include:
- Anxiety management
- Physical activity
- Management of respiratory emergencies.
8 weeks to a Healthier You is an educational series (8 classes, 1 ½ hours each). Ideal for those with a chronic health condition (for example excessive weight, arthritis, diabetes, asthma, heart failure, high cholesterol, depression, etc) struggling to achieve their health goals. The series provides insightful approaches to behavior and lifestyle change aimed to help participants overcome barriers. The series is facilitated by a licensed clinical social worker and also engages guest speakers such as dietitians, nurses, and/or pharmacists.
Living Healthy with Chronic Pain is a 2 hour class designed to enhance self-management skills and improve quality of life for those struggling with chronic pain.
The class offers discussion and education for improving daily management of pain through lifestyle changes and self- management skill development.
Honor Yourself: Advance Care Planning & More is a 2 hour class that provides information on:
- Understanding the facts
- What are your Medical options?
- How do I select a Healthcare agent?
- Understanding various forms and when to update them.
- How do I start a conversation about my wishes?
Keep the Beat! Strategies for Heart Health is a two session class providing information on healthy lifestyle changes to improve cholesterol levels and blood pressure control. Each class is 2 hours and is fascilitated by a Registered Nurse and a Registered Dietitian. Topics covered will include:
- Stress Management
- Physical activity
- Weight Management for a healthy heart
Do More with Heart Failure is a 2 hour class facilitated by a registered nurse. The class aims to improve self-care for people with heart failure by offering interactive education and discussion.Topics covered will include:
- Symptom management
- Low sodium nutrition
- Fluids and daily weights
- Physical activity and overcoming fears
Resources listed below are offered throughout the year free of charge at multiple locations.
2 hour interactive workshop addressing strategies to quit tobacco. Basic Information about tobacco addiction, how to break the addiction cycle, medications, and self-management skills.
The SToP: Stop Tobacco Smoking Cessation series meets for 7 sessions over several weeks and focuses on empowering tobacco users to overcome the addiction. It incorporates many aspects of smoking cessation including behavior modification, nutrition, medications, and relapse prevention. Various tools and strategies are offered and a multidisciplinary team consults with the group to support each person’s process. Led by a Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist.
Smoke-Free Support Group is a once a month, drop-in group for those who have quit tobacco and desire ongoing support. Directed discussion about various topics as presented by participants. Facilitated by a Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist or Health Educator. Drop-in basis for UC Davis Health System Patients and Employees. No registration required.
Smoke-Free Support Group is also offered once a month as a web based support group. This group also has directed discussion about various topics as presented by participants. Co-facilitated by a Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist and Health Educator. Pre-registration is required for this web based group. Please call, (916)734-0718 to pre-register.

Achieving a Healthy Weight is a 2 hour weight management class. Topics include overview of healthy weight loss strategies.
The class explores the benefits of weight loss and physical activity while utilizing tools such as BMI, waist measurement, portion sizes, plate method, and food journaling for support.
Living Light Living Well is a multi-phase adult weight management and lifestyle program. During the First Steps (phase 1) we meet each week for 12 weeks, each class is 2 hours and is facilitated by a Registered Dietitian and Health Educator. Learn new approaches for reaching your healthier weight and improving overall wellness.
Sessions include topics such as:
- Long-term behavior changes
- A non-diet approach to weight loss
- The benefits and different types of physical activity
- Empowerment and responsibility towards weight management
After Frist Steps, continue with bi-monthly sessions during Transitions (phase 2) to continue on your weight loss journey, Ongoing Support (phase 3) is avaialable after completion of First Steps and Transitions. Ongoing Support consists of monthly web- and/ or phone based sessions. The program is open to UC Davis Health System Patients and Employees.
$175 Fee includes all 3 phases- Frist Steps, Transitions, & On-going Support , cost of materials is included! Medical clearance by your physician is required prior to participation in the program, also some lab tests may be necessary. ____________________________________________________________________
