A message from the Vice Chancellor

Over the past four decades, UC Davis Health System has grown to become a nationally recognized leader in research, education, patient care and community engagement. With a top-ranked school of medicine, a 613-bed teaching hospital, an  extensive network of community-based clinics, and a newly established school of nursing, we are discovering and sharing knowledge to advance the health of our community every day.

As the University of California, Davis celebrates its centennial year, we are proud of our past and enthusiastic about the many bold, new ventures in our future, activities which are transforming the practice of medicine and the delivery of healthcare.

UC Davis Health System is playing a prominent role in a wide range of academic and service programs. For example, we are at the forefront of California’s stem cell research initiative; we are taking the lead on a statewide program that will bring telecommunications infrastructure to rural areas to improve access to health care; and we are coordinating a national research consortium to improve the quality of life for patients after a burn injury. Our soon-to-be-completed new hospital pavilion with state-of-the-art facilities for emergency medicine and Level 1 trauma care will enhance our ability to provide Northern California residents with life-saving care when serious injuries or illnesses occur.

It’s an exciting time to be in health care and to pioneer new activities that will define its future. One of our top priorities is to integrate medical, nursing and public health curricula so that professionals learn shoulder-to-shoulder to deliver patient-centered care as part of a health-care team. Through the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing and our work to establish a school of public health, we are expanding our commitment to interprofessional training to develop the health-care leaders of tomorrow.

This was a year of great progress and inspiration at UC Davis Health System. I invite you to read the stories in this annual report and join us in celebrating our amazing journey to ensure better health for all – both in our local communities and around the globe.

Sincerely,

Claire Pomeroy, M.D., M.B.A.
