Ann Madden Rice is chief executive officer of the University of California, Davis, Medical Center in Sacramento. She is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and has experience in both academic and community medical centers.

As CEO, Rice oversees more than 8,000 employees at the medical center, an acute-care teaching hospital with 627 beds, an annual budget of approximately $2 billion, medical clinics in 11 California communities, and extensive telemedicine and cancer care networks.

In her ten years of service at UC Davis Medical Center, Rice oversaw the construction and opening of a 472,000 square foot, technologically advanced addition to the main hospital, which was the largest construction project completed by UC Davis. During that time, UC Davis Medical Center became consistently recognized in U.S. News & World Report, earned “A” Grades from Leapfrog, and achieved Nursing Magnet status from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Rice is very involved in national, state and local health care and civic policy. She currently serves as California Hospital Association Past Chair. She serves as Vice Chair of Vizient, and Chair of AMC Networks Board of Managers. Rice has served as the California Senate appointee on the California Health Facilities Financing Authority. She previously served on the American Hospital Association Region 9 Regional Policy Board and the California Association of Healthcare Leaders Board. She is a past national president of the Association of Healthcare Internal Auditors.

Rice serves on the Sacramento Metro Chamber Board of Directors and on its Executive Committee, and is Past Chairperson of the Sacramento Area Commerce and Trade Organization and served on the Comstock’s Editorial Board.

Rice is frequently named among Becker’s Hospital Review “Women Hospital and Health System Leaders to Know.” She received the Senior Level Healthcare Executive Award from the California Association of Healthcare Leaders, the Muncie Gold Merit Award from Healthcare Financial Management Association, and alumni awards from both Iowa State University and the University of Iowa. Rice has received the Women Who Mean Business Award from the Sacramento Business Journal. Rice received the Sacramento Metro Chamber Businesswoman of the Year Award in January 2017.

Prior to joining UC Davis Medical Center, Rice was chief financial officer and chief operating officer for the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Rice received a baccalaureate degree in Industrial Administration and a master’s degree in Accounting.
